Eating humble (blueberry) pie

A few weeks ago, I declared in no uncertain terms that I do NOT like blueberries. Well my dear second-mother, Mama Lina, laughed in that declaration’s face and excitedly shoved a slice of blueberry pie in front of me at a party last week!

I was very unenthused about trying this given my last experience with blueberries (and that there were cookies, brownies, and chocolate cake elsewhere on the dessert table), but I can’t say no to Mama Lina!

What I don’t think she realized is that not only was this new for me because it was blueberry, but…and this is going to shock some people…this was also my first ever pie.

first. pie. ever.

Yes, it’s true. Pie is just not my thing. I come from a long line of chocolate enthusiasts, and although I have no doubt that pie can be made more delicious with the addition of chocolate, I also have no doubt that cookies, cakes, and ice cream are superior no matter what.

Don’t at me. Don’t tell me about your family recipes. Don’t send me pie. I am who I am!

But anyway, back to my story: I’ve just been told that “dessert is out”, meaning that I know full well there is an abundance of chocolate just waiting to make its way onto my plate, when Lina gives me a plate full of fruit instead.

I was so ready to hate this. I had my face puckered before even taking a bite, and although I promised Lina I’d try it, I made no promises about enjoying it.

Well, you may have noticed that the title of this blog post (which my sister-in-law suggested, so shout out to her) spoils the ending. I can’t and won’t say that I loved blueberry pie, but I definitely didn’t hate it.

Let’s put it this way: I took multiple bites, which is saying a lot for me, but didn’t finish my slice, which is pretty par for the course with me.

The thing I disliked most about fresh blueberries a few weeks ago was the mushy texture. This pie eliminated that natural flaw and replaced it with sweet, jammy fruit filling between two sheets of baked sugar dough.

This slice of pie truly proved that enough sugar on anything can make it taste good!

Mama Lina, you were right, and your commitment to making me like blueberry pie is appreciated. I may even be so bold as to try this sub-par fruit in a muffin next! Or maybe go crazy and try a different kind of pie?? The possibilities are endless!

Let me know what fruity dessert (that is destined to be inferior to chocolate) I should try next or just gasp in amazement that I had never eaten pie until last week on Instagram @thepickyeaterchronicles!
